The location, use and proportions of wheelie bins present a unique design challenge. The fundamental necessity is that they require a simple signifier to the property it belongs to. This creates a real diversity of responses.
Lettering is often done in crude style, with the tools available; be that left over emulsion paint and a scouring pad, electrical tape or marker pens. As a bin is something that holds rubbish, usually little consideration is taken for the design of lettering. This often gives them a directness and immediacy.
